New sculpture from Lawrence Weiner

The sculpture, Forever and a day, by the artist Lawrence Weiner, is manufactured using sintrawood, an innovative new material made of recycled injected plastic. Currently on display outside Santa Caterina market in Barcelona, the sculpture will be traveling and is scheduled to visit other Spanish cities.

Lawrence Weiner (New York, 1942), one of the main artists in the development of conceptual art in the 60s, has designed a sculpture for ArtAids Foundation to raise awareness about AIDS among the city inhabitants. The piece, exhibited outside Santa Caterina’s Market, aims to show the social exclusion of people who suffer AIDS disease.

Lawrence Weiner’s piece invites people to think about controversial issues. Forever and a Day, as a sculpture-bench, proposes people to sit and think. The sculpture is made up of a bench and a triangular obelisk. At the top of each side there is text that reads: “Forever and a Day. Placed upon the Same Place as Itself”.

Viewed from the top the sculpture is shaped like an ellipsis inside which there is a triangle. The base, on which the 2-meter high triangular obelisk sits, consists of 34 oval levels. Each one consists on eight pieces, with a total of 300 pieces. One of the main features of this sculpture-bench is the material: sintrawood, made made from recycled plastics.

Decustik, the company responsible for manufacturing this sculpture, is specialized in the manufacture of acoustic and decorative panels for walls and ceilings.
